Short answer: Cursor for Windows can run two accounts at once if each instance gets its own --user-data-dir. Done by hand, the windows look identical, shortcuts open the wrong one and the update message never leaves. An app can open each account in its own window, titled with its name, with a tray switcher.

Why Cursor for Windows holds one account
Cursor installs per user, in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\cursor, and keeps everything for the signed-in account in one data folder: %APPDATA%\Cursor. Your sign-in, settings and chats live there. One folder holds one sign-in, so a second account replaces the first, and switching means signing out and back in.

We make Sessions Pro for Cursor.
Option 1: A second Windows user
Add another user in Settings → Accounts → Other users and sign in to the other Cursor account there. It's fully separate, but you see one user's desktop at a time, and your repositories, Git and SSH setup live in the other user's folder.
Option 2: A second instance with its own folder (free)
Cursor accepts the --user-data-dir option, which starts an instance with its own data folder. In Command Prompt:
"%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\cursor\Cursor.exe" --user-data-dir="%APPDATA%\Cursor-Work" --extensions-dir="%USERPROFILE%\.cursor-work\extensions"
Or in PowerShell:
& "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Programs\cursor\Cursor.exe" --user-data-dir="$env:APPDATA\Cursor-Work" --extensions-dir="$env:USERPROFILE\.cursor-work\extensions"
Sign in to the second account in that window. You can save the command as a desktop shortcut. Then the problems start, and the Cursor forum thread “Can I run two instances of Cursor with two different accounts?” lists them:
“It feels kind of random as to which one pops up.”
From the thread “Can I run two instances of Cursor with two different accounts?”, forum.cursor.com/t/145882
- Every window looks the same. In our test with Cursor 3.27, all windows carried the same title, whichever account they belonged to.
- Pinned shortcuts get mixed up. One post reports that a taskbar pin for the second instance “launches Instance #1”.
- The update message never goes away. “The 'New Update Available' message is constantly on my screen.”
- Getting both to run is fiddly. Another line from the thread: “I can not run them at the same time.”
The full method, with the Mac commands and every catch, is in Cursor --user-data-dir, and where it breaks.
Option 3: Each account in its own named window
Sessions Pro for Cursor for Windows runs your installed Cursor once per account, each with its own data folder, and gives every window a title with its account name, so you always know which one you're typing into. A tray icon opens or switches between accounts. One installed Cursor serves every account, so there's nothing extra to keep up to date, and updates are switched off in the account windows, so the update message stays out of your way.
Each account keeps its own sign-in, chats, settings, extensions, agent stores and per-project agent data. Your MCP servers, rules and skills are shared on purpose, so your tools follow you into every account. One licence covers Windows and Mac.
Setting it up with Sessions Pro for Cursor on Windows
- Install Cursor, then Sessions Pro for Cursor. It works with the Cursor already installed for your Windows user.
- Add an account. Name it Work, Personal or after a client. It opens in its own Cursor window titled with that name.
- Sign in once. Each account starts signed out. Sign in in your browser as usual, and that account stays signed in.
- Switch from the tray. Open any account, or bring it to the front, from the tray icon. Alt-Tab works too, and the window titles tell them apart.
Is it allowed to use multiple Cursor accounts?
Yes. Cursor staff answered this on the Cursor forum in July 2026: “Having multiple accounts is totally fine. The only restriction is sharing a single account.” (forum.cursor.com) Use separate accounts for work, personal projects and clients; just don't share one account between people.

FAQ
Can I run two instances of Cursor with two different accounts on Windows?
Yes, if each instance has its own data folder. Start the second one with --user-data-dir, or use an app that opens each account in its own named window.
Why does Windows open the wrong Cursor instance?
All instances are the same Cursor.exe to Windows, so a pinned shortcut or the taskbar can bring up whichever one it finds first. Sessions Pro for Cursor opens each account from its tray icon and titles each window with the account name.
Do I need to install Cursor more than once?
No. One installed Cursor serves every account; each account just gets its own data folder.
Which versions of Windows are supported?
64-bit Windows 10 and 11, on Intel, AMD or ARM, with Cursor installed.
Is it allowed to have more than one Cursor account?
Cursor staff answered this on the Cursor forum in July 2026: “Having multiple accounts is totally fine. The only restriction is sharing a single account.” (forum.cursor.com) Use it for accounts you own, such as work, personal and client accounts. Every method on this page runs the official Cursor app, and Cursor's terms apply to each account.
